Jack Okeyo’s mother, Grace, lived with Peter Arum, a man who may or
may not have been Jack’s father. Peter loved him, Jack
recalls, while his mother, a very bitter lady, beat him repeatedly.
After Peter and Grace separated, Grace went to work as a prostitute
and left Jack in charge of his younger brothers during her absence.
One night, when Grace was out, the house caught on fire. Jack
saved his younger brothers from the burning house.
One day, Jack left the house to go and stay with an older lady who
offered to protect and take care of him. His mother came, brought
Jack back to her house, and beat him. She then poured paraffin on
him and attempted to burn him alive. A neighbor came to the boy’s
rescue, and that’s when Jack took to the streets. He was only
eleven when he fled home and spent the next three years living on
the streets before coming to Agape.
Jack is one of many who have benefited from GCM’s ministry in Kenya
